Situated on the edge of the traditional village of Abondance which lies about 30km to the South of Lake Geneva it is a 'proper' French village with artisan baker, butcher, weekly market and a handful of bars and restaurants. The village gives its name to the Abondance cow and to the local cheese made from their milk - a bit like a Gruyere but perhaps more nutty. Cows are a big thing in Abondance: there's a Festival of the Cow every Autumn when the cows are ceremoniously brought down from the high pastures to overwinter in the village.
